AfroToniQ has changed with the South African house music scene, tailoring his sound to the current cultural trends. The Qwaqwa native is mostly a house producer, but he started making gqom music in the middle of the 2010s when the Durban-based subgenre was popular.
He started experimenting with the amapiano sound, a subgenre of South African dance music that has become a mainstay for the nation’s dance floors, toward the end of the decade and into the 2020s. The 2020 fan favorite “Fohloza,” a song in which he amps up the amapiano’s traditional log drum and washes it with strings and synths, is the result of his collaboration with The Yanos.
