Deep house may never have departed, especially with Amapiano as its most recent progeny. Audiences rewarded a return to its early versions in 2022. Senior Oat, Zakes Bantwini, Oscar Mbo, Sun-El Musician, and Gaba Cannal, among others, were in the vanguard of this raging wave.
Similarly, South African hip hop enjoyed a comeback. In addition to the online beefs, we saw tremendous comebacks among the genre’s most established incumbents, whether genuine or staged to re-ignite interest in a genre that had otherwise flatlined. K.O’s comeback has been brutal, as have the offers from AKA, Touchline, and Big Zulu.
