Mi Casa, a South African dance behemoth, has been tearing up the charts since 2011, fusing house music, cutting-edge Afrobeats, and modern jazz textures into thrilling, meditative musical adventures. Dr. Duda, vocalist/guitarist J’Something, and trumpeter Mo-T met during a nightclub jam session in Johannesburg in 2011 and quickly developed an amazing creative connection. Later that year, they published their self-titled debut LP.
While Dr. Duda was already a well-known producer on the national scene, early Mi Casa singles like “These Streets” let Mo-T’s traditional jazz inspirations show through, while “La Vida” put a loving accent on J’Something’s Portuguese heritage.
The group’s meteoric rise has resulted in consistent chart dominance: they debuted at No. 1 with their sophomore LP Su Casa in 2013, founded their label 34 Music shortly after, and have consistently broadened their house and nu-disco sonic palette while incorporating a variety of organic percussion instruments.
