The Weeknd & Gesaffelstein delivered a dark, atmospheric masterpiece with “I Was Never There,” a standout track from the critically acclaimed 2018 EP “My Dear Melancholy,”. Blending alternative R&B/Soul with industrial electronic textures, the song showcases The Weeknd’s haunting vocal delivery over Gesaffelstein’s brooding, minimalist production. It has since become a fan-favorite single for listeners seeking moody, late-night R&B anthems that explore themes of heartbreak and emotional detachment.

For fans of contemporary R&B/Soul looking to add this exceptional collaboration to their personal playlists, “I Was Never There” remains an essential listen from the “My Dear Melancholy,” project. The seamless fusion of The Weeknd’s emotive lyricism and Gesaffelstein’s signature sonic landscape highlights a pivotal moment in both artists’ discographies, capturing the raw essence of dark R&B.
